George Lopez Half-Jokes He Might ‘Cry’ When Reflecting on Sandra Bullock’s Impact on His Career

George Lopez reflects on the pivotal role his friend Sandra Bullock played in his career.

In the latest episode Who is talking to Chris Wallace?The 62-year-old comedian half-jokingly said he might “cry” at Bullock’s support after she becomes an executive producer on his sitcom, George Lopezin 2002.

The Lopez vs. Lopez star recalled that at the time he was doing things that had “never been done before in a stand-up sense” like a Latino comic and getting used to rejection in Hollywood, saying: “And after our first date, which I wasn’t going to go to. I mean , really, I’ve heard not that many times, you’re like, ‘What is she going to do for me?’”

“And when we were leaving her production company, we went down the stairs as she was opening the door and I said, ‘Hey, whatever happens with this, wherever it goes or doesn’t go, I just want to say thank you. You know, thanks also because what you’re going to try to do has never been successful before,’ he continued. “And then she said, ‘Why don’t you worry about being funny and why don’t you let me worry about all this other stuff?'”

When host Chris Wallace asked if Bullock, 59, had “got his back” over the past two decades, Lopez replied, “Yes. She has.”

George Lopez publishes the latest book in the ‘ChupaCarter’ series for middle grades

Back in 2006, Lopez revealed to PEOPLE his relationship with The lost city star, saying, “Sandra Bullock totally gave me life.”

Bullock was looking for Latino talent when she was introduced to Lopez, then a little-known comedian working in the comedy circuit. Bullock drove an hour from Los Angeles to Orange County to capture his point. Two years later, she was the executive producer of his hit television show, George Lopez.

“From the time Sandy and I first met, she was just a person of her word and she hugged me and my family,” he said of Bullock, who frequented the set of his show, even making a few guest appearances. “She’s beautiful. I love her!”

The pair have been friends since 2000. As a gift many years before his interview with PEOPLE, Bullock gave Lopez his first BlackBerry, and she sent him a note that he kept.

She said, ‘If you ever need me, I’m your big sister. If you ever need me to be the villain, I’ll be the villain,’ he said.
