The 2024 Olympics will allow medal winners to take a piece of Paris with them.
Organizers revealed Thursday that every medal at the 2024 Paris Games will feature a piece of original iron from the Eiffel Tower. To create the revolutionary design, the planning committee invited Chaumet, a French jewelry house.
“We consulted the archives department with two main ideas in mind: to process this piece of the Eiffel Tower in the shape of a hexagon to represent France and put it in the center of the medal and in the center of the work of radiation and faceting of the gold,” Chaumet creative director Clémentine Massonnat told Olympics.com.

The website explains that each medal has “iron in the puddle”. [that] it has been left in its original colour” in the middle and embossed with the emblem of the Paris 2024 Games to give a “two-tone effect”.
Surrounding the hexagon are thin lines at irregular intervals that are “drawn, not engraved” to represent “both the splendor of France in the world and the great performances of the athletes at the Games,” according to the website. The Paralympic medals will also be encrusted with the Eiffel Tower icon.

“As usual, Paris 2024 put the athletes at the center of the project. We wanted two things: to have similar medals for Olympians and Paralympians, and for the medals to contain a piece of invaluable iron [from the Eiffel Tower]”, five-time gold medalist biathlete Martin Fourcade told Olympics.com
This opinion is shared by the president of the organizing committee, Tony Estanguet, who said in a statement that the plan is for the medals to be “truly unique.”
“If medals have such power, it is also because they have remained throughout history, edition after edition, since the modern Olympic Games were created. In Paris 2024, we faced a new challenge: to magnify the medals and ensure that they said something about our Olympic and Paralympic Games. We wanted these medals to be truly unique, to bear the signature of Paris 2024,” Estanguet said in a press release.
