Geri Halliwell-Horner Explains Why She’s Ditched the Glitz in Favor of More Neutral Clothes

Geri Halliwell-Horner gets real when she says goodbye to the bright colors of her Spice Girls era.

The singer, 51, revealed why her fashion has transformed over the years from “loud, expressive” outfits to a “calmer palette” during an appearance on Today with Hoda and Jenna.

“You only wear white and cream underwear, is that true?” Jenna Bush Hager asked her.

“I don’t know about you, but as you get older, you want to be simpler,” Halliwell-Horner replies, noting, “And one thing I will say is that everything matches. It’s just, like, quick, quick.”

She compared it to how men often dress in simpler outfits, which makes it easier for them to choose an outfit because there are so many different combinations with the basics.

“You look at men who always wear the same thing – the uniform,” she continued. “Can I do the same? Why not?”

Halliwell-Horner’s new style is a far cry from what she wore at the height of her Spice Girls fame in the 90s – which was mentioned when Today showed a picture of her wearing her iconic Union Jack dress.

“I made that dress out of a tea towel,” she said, adding that when she looks back at those outfits, “I go, ‘Aw.’

In the interview for 2020 VogueHalliwell-Horner said her style at the time had a “really strong flavor”.

When it came to the Union Jack dress, which she paired with red latex platform boots, she explained that “the length of the dress is sexuality, and the big boots say, ‘You know what, you’re not going to mess with me.’ ”

The outfit then became a worldwide symbol of girl power, with everyone from Kate Moss to Prince William wearing pieces embroidered with the British flag. It was eventually sold at auction for nearly $50,000 in 1998.

Halliwell-Horner also spoke about the difficulty of finding her style over time, especially as she grew up. The singer told Vogue that she was at a crossroads in her life at the time — 10 years older than she was at the start of her career, but wanting to prove she was still just as hot.

And during the 2017 Spice Girls reunion, she wore a Roberto Cavalli version of a crystal-covered Union Jack dress. “I think it’s quite a difficult age. [Like,] ‘Where do you belong?’ said Horner. “That dress, the Cavalli dress, absolutely embodies everything I felt.”

Halliwell-Horner also wore a full Union Jack ball gown that featured a corset and drop waist for the Spice Girls reunion tour in 2019. “I felt empowered by developing the dress into something different, something even more timeless,” she said of the outfit. “For me, it shows the revolution of being a woman.”

The singer, who married Christian Horner in 2015 and is the mother of two children, added that all these experiences helped her to slowly switch her wardrobe over the years to something simpler and more classic.
