When it comes to ’90s fashion icons, no conversation is complete without mentioning the Spice Girls.
The British girl band — made up of Geri Halliwell-Horner, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm, Melanie Brown and Victoria Beckham — wore some of the most memorable outfits of the 1990s and early 2000s as they took to the stage to sing their most legendary songs, including “Wannabe ” ” and “Spice up your life”.
Much like the Spice Girls’ music has stood the test of time, ’90s fashion has also come back on the scene lately as trends always do. Halliwell-Horner, who experienced it first hand as Ginger Spice, is all too familiar with all things ’90s style.
But now she’s looking at ’90s style from a whole new perspective — as a mom whose 17-year-old daughter, Bluebell, and her friends are exploring the trends for the first time.

“I was watching the girls getting those awards,” Halliwell-Horner tells PEOPLE of a recent trip to her daughter Bluebell’s school. “I looked at the girls and they all had those baggy combat pants. Then, they had thick sneakers and those tops. I never gave away my low-rise jeans!”
Halliwell-Horner says she looked around and realized that all the teenagers were wearing everything that used to be popular in the 1990s. While some people who have lived through these trends are ready to see them die, Halliwell-Horner thinks otherwise. She actually thinks it’s “nice” to see them around.
“The truth is that everything is cyclical,” she says. “If you think about it, in the Tudor era, they wore this basque thing that pulled you in, pushed your tits out like that, but then if you cut to the ’90s, it was replicated again in Vivienne Westwood.”

It’s not just saved for the 1990s, though — trends from every decade make a comeback in some shape or form. Every few years, a style from decades past will make its way back into the mainstream as fashion houses revive those trends, as Halliwell-Horner points out. It’s a trickle down effect from there until the styles are in every store you see.
“We recycle our ideas, but we dress them up a little bit,” she tells PEOPLE of how fashion is constantly evolving.

As a Spice Girl in the 1990s, Halliwell-Horner was at the forefront of trends, alongside Baby Spice, Sporty Spice, Scary Spice and Posh Spice — also known as the Spice Girls.
Whether they were wearing towering platform shoes, tiny hot pants, space buns in their hair or the now iconic Union Jack miniskirt, the group of girls were the blueprint for what was popular throughout the decade. But while her glitz and glamor tiny outfit may have been her go-to during the ’90s, Halliwell-Horner is quick to admit that it’s no longer her forte.
“I don’t know about you, but as you get older, you want to be simpler,” Halliwell-Horner said during an appearance on Today with Hoda and Jenna October 4. “And I will say one thing that everything matches. It’s just, like, quick, quick.”

She said that these days she opts for a “calmer palette” when it comes to her clothes, instead of the bright colors and “loud, expressive” combinations she was once known for.
She compared it to how men often dress in simpler outfits, which makes it easier for them to choose an outfit because there are so many different combinations with the basics.
“You look at men who always wear the same thing – the uniform,” she continued. “Can I do the same? Why not?”
