Two victims were treated for serious gunshot wounds and rushed to hospital after armed officers swooped in at 5.34pm.

A woman believed to be the baby’s mother was heard shouting: “My baby, my baby has been shot.”

Witnesses believe the attack was “targeted”, but police have not confirmed this.

The girl is believed to have been caught in the crossfire when a man opened fire while she was sitting in a car.

A two-year-old child and a 32-year-old woman were also in the car, but luckily they were unharmed.

In the latest update this afternoon, the Met said a 22-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Scotland Yard said it was awaiting an update on the condition of both victims.

But police said the girl’s injuries are not life-threatening and she is undergoing surgery in a serious but stable condition.

Local resident Sharon said: “The guy shot directly into the car.

“I was literally walking out of my mom’s apartment block and as I was walking out I saw a guy shooting at the car multiple times.

“He shot directly, from close range, as if you were standing to open the door, they shot directly at it.

“I was in complete shock and just ran back up the stairs because I was so scared.

“Then I looked and heard screaming after that, and then people were coming out to call the police.”

Sharon added: “I’ve noticed over the last few years it’s become a lot more unsafe for people here.”

Chief Superintendent Owen Renowden said: “Yesterday afternoon we received a number of 999 calls reporting a shooting.

“We heard that people in the vehicle were injured and multiple units were sent to the scene, including armed police officers.

“A 34-year-old man and an eight-year-old girl were found with serious gunshot wounds.

“A two-year-old child and a 32-year-old woman were also in the car, but luckily they were unharmed.

“Both the man and the girl are in the hospital in a serious but stable condition.

“The man has life-changing injuries and the girl remains in surgery. Her injuries are not known to be life-threatening.

“A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.”

Kensington and Bayswater MP Joe Powell said: “These senseless acts of violence have no place on our streets.

“I know the residents of the local community will be rightly concerned for their safety following several recent incidents in the neighbourhood.

“We must work together to better prevent these horrific crimes and hold those responsible accountable.”
