Gita Gopinath is an Indian-American economist who was appointed First Vice President of the International Monetary Fund in January 2022.

Gita Gopinath was born on Wednesday, December 8, 1971, in Kolkata, India (52 years old; as of 2023). She completed her education at Nirmala Convent School, Mysore. She received her bachelor’s degree in economics from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University in 1992 and her master’s degree in economics from Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University in 1994. She subsequently earned a master’s degree from the University of Washington in 1996. In 2001, Geeta received a PhD in economics from Princeton University. In July 2018, Geeta was invited to participate in the interview as the chief economist of the International Monetary Fund, and passed the interview and was appointed as the chief economist of the International Monetary Fund. Geeta was the first Indian woman to be elected chief economist of the International Monetary Fund. She was also the first director of the Research Department of the International Monetary Fund and an economic adviser to the IMF.
Gita Gopinath has conducted extensive research on international finance and macroeconomics and published in several top economic journals.

Gita belonged to a middle-class Hindu Malayali family who lived in Kolkata and later moved to Mysuru in Karnataka when Gita was 9 years old. Geeta often comes to India to meet her parents.

Geeta’s husband’s name is Iqbal Singh Dhaliwal. He is the global executive director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab in the MIT Department of Economics. Iqbal and Geeta were classmates at Delhi University. Gita and Iqbal got engaged in 1997 and married in 1999. While studying in college, they all prepare to appear for the UPSC examination. In 1995, Iqbal passed the examination with first rank and became an IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre. He served as an IAS officer for 5 years, after which he quit his job and moved to the United States with Gita, where they blessed and a son, Rahil Singh Dhaliwal.

In 2001, Gita Gopinath joined the University of Chicago Booth School of Business as an assistant professor of economics. Gita Gopinath joined Harvard University in 2005. She holds the John Zwainstra Professorship of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University. For several years, Geeta took a leave of absence from the economics department to serve as chief economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). She is the third woman and second Indian to become a permanent member of Harvard University’s Department of Economics.

International Monetary Fund Economist
In July 2018, Gita Gopinath was invited to be interviewed by the Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund. She passed the interview and was appointed chief economist of the International Monetary Fund. Geeta is the first Indian-American woman to be elected chief economist of the International Monetary Fund.She served for three years as the IMF’s Economic Advisor and Director of the Research Department before being promoted to First Vice Managing Director, the second highest position at the organization.
In addition, Gita Gopinath is co-director of the International Finance and Macroeconomics Program at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Previously, Geeta Gopinath served as a member of the Economic Advisory Group of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and as an economic advisor to Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister of the Indian state of Kerala. In 2018, Gita Gopinath was elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Econometric Society. In 2019, she became editor of the Handbook of International Economics and serves as co-editor of The American Economy.
