The first Monday in May may be for the Met Gala and plenty of celebrities, but the third Monday is for the dogs.
On May 20, the AKC Museum of the Dog in New York hosted the inaugural Pet Gala, a night of canine fashion modeled after the famous Met Gala.
Pet Gala started in 2013 as a photo project of pet couturier and womenswear designer Anthony Rubio. For years, Rubio recreated Met Gala looks for chic dogs, then shared his creations through annual photo shoots. For 2024, Rubio has partnered with the AKC Museum of the Dog to expand the project and turn it into its own glam event.

For the inaugural Pet Gala, dogs arrived in fashionable outfits created by Rubio. Over the past two weeks, Rubio has designed all of the dog fashion for the Pet Gala to ensure that each outfit is a recreation of a look from the 2024 Pet Gala for pets.
“I want people to understand that we’re not mocking the Met Gala. We’re not imitating the Met Gala,” Rubio told The Associated Press. “We elevate and evaluate and appreciate the beautiful designs presented at the Met Gala by the world’s most talented designers.”
