Golden Bachelor’s Ellen Goltzer Developed a ‘Golf Ball’-Size Abscess Before Filming and Almost Quit

Previous The Golden Bachelor contestant Ellen Goltzer reveals how a medical scare almost made her give up her spot on the show.

On Friday, during an episode of “The Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous” podcast, Goltzer, 71, explained how she developed an abscess on her face before filming.

“I have never told anyone this. … I developed an abscess on my cheek and it was three weeks before I was supposed to leave,” Goltzer said. “It was really like a golf ball.”

During the podcast, the former contestant went on to explain how her friend Roberta shared some words of wisdom when she was dealing with a medical issue. Roberta, who died of cancer before The Golden Bachelor broadcast, prompted Goltzer to apply.

“I knew I wasn’t going. That’s how bad it was,” she said. “But she kept motivating me.”

“Roberta told me all the time – it’s clear to me from there – ‘never say never,'” continued the former contestant. She added that her face “cleared enough to cover it with makeup.”

Goltzer also noted that before the shoot, she traveled from Florida to her doctor in New York to try to resolve the issue. However, while the abscess remained, the former teacher took a chance and ended up joining the show to find love.

In October, Goltzer spoke to PEOPLE about her time on the show, which ended when she didn’t get a rose from Gerry Turner, who she said she fell “head over heels in love with.”

During her time on the ABC dating show, Goltzer was open about her feelings for Turner. She said: “People who know me will say, ‘Wow, I’ve seen a side of her that I’ve never really seen before’, but my ability to be open and honest and share things with him. I think he was a little surprised, and I surprised myself [with] the ability to do so.”

She also admitted that she has been in touch with a former beau since she appeared on national television. Goltzer said “old guys from college and high school” “reached out” after seeing her on the show.

“It’s almost a surreal experience. People use that word a lot, but it’s true,” she said. “It’s almost like an out-of-body experience where you don’t think he’s watching me, but I don’t think it’s actually me.”

“And then when people come up to me and say something like, ‘Oh, I know you,’ or people reach out from elementary school. ‘I went to the Forestry School with her.’ It’s crazy,” she added.
