Google Doodle celebrates the national elections in Switzerland

In light of today’s scheduled federal elections in Switzerland, Google Doodle has released a doodle. Every member of the Council of States and the National Council will be elected on this day. After these elections, Switzerland will hold elections for the president, the Federal Council and the national collective government on December 13. Equality throughout Switzerland regulates the qualification requirements for candidates and voters in elections to the National Councils. Those who wish to vote or run for office must be Swiss citizens and be at least eighteen years old. Regardless of the length or frequency of their stay in Switzerland, Swiss citizens residing abroad have the right to participate by registering to vote either in their nationality or in the canton in which they have recently resided.

The 26 cantons that make up each electoral unit elect 200 members of the National Council. Proportional representation of open lists is used in multi-member cantons, together with tenants for lists within parties and apartments for united parties. First, when allocating seats, all visible lists are taken into account. The Hagenbach-Bischoff system is used for seat allocation; there is no set threshold. Voters can make their list on a blank ballot paper, cross people off on party lists and split their votes between several parties using the Panachage system or any combination of these. Six single-member cantons accepted the vote of the first candidate.

Cantonal seats in the National Council are allocated according to population size, which includes non-voting foreigners and children. Based on the official population as of the end of 2020, Zurich gained one place and Basel-Stadt lost one. Of all the cantons, Zurich has the most places. Google Doodles are fun, unexpected, and occasionally improvised alterations to the Google logo to honor special occasions, anniversaries, and the lives of prominent scientists, artists, and pioneers.
