Scheme of SHRESHTA
SHRESHTA Scheme: The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has launched the ‘Programme for Residential Education for High School Students in Targeted Areas’ (SHRESHTA). It was introduced to improve education and raise the socio-economic status of Scheduled Castes.
An official statement by the ministry said that the main objectives of this effort are to increase the reach of the government’s development programs and to close the service gaps in the regions of the education sector which are mostly inhabited by SC population.
SHRESHTA scheme to provide high quality education to SC students
According to a press release, the aim of SHRESHTA is to create an environment that will be beneficial for the socioeconomic advancement and overall development of SC students, ensuring a better future for them. Furthermore, it aims to promote cooperation between residential secondary schools that provide high-quality education and scholarship institutions run by non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
The implementation of the system is divided into two different ways. The best private residential schools affiliated to CBSE and State Board are SHRESHTA institutions. Under this approach, a predetermined number of outstanding SC students will be selected every year from among the States and Union Territories (UTs) through the National Entrance Examination for SHRESHTA (NETS), administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
The children will then be admitted to top class private residential schools affiliated to CBSE/state boards to complete their education from class nine to class twelve. The selection committee selects these schools based on their exceptional performance; schools with more than 75% pass rate for 10th and 12th grade during the previous three years are selected for admission.
SHRESHTA scheme: How will students be selected?
Every year, the National Testing Agency (NTA) will select approximately 3,000 SC children whose combined annual income of their parents is less than 2.5 lakh rupees. These students will have a range of educational options based on their abilities.
This is noteworthy because the program pays all fees for each student, including mess and school fees. The specific allowances admissible for each class are: 9.: ₹ 1,00,000; 10th: ₹ 1,10,000; 11th: ₹ 1,25,000; 12th: ₹ 1,35,000, as detailed in the press release.
Who implemented the SHRESHTA scheme?
The “SHRESHTA” scheme was introduced by Virendra Kumar to provide residential education to high school students in targeted areas.
