Gracie Abrams Tells the Full Story of the Fire at Taylor Swift's Apartment: 'We Did Get Burned'

Gracie Abrams tells the whole songwriting story with Taylor Swift that ended up with “Us.” and a kitchen fire.

In PEOPLE’s exclusive clip from an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music that was released Monday at 1 p.m. EST, the 24-year-old “Block Me Out” singer admitted that the duo “drank a lot of alcohol” at a dinner in New York. the night of the accident, which she documented on video and shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday.

They discussed their upcoming projects (which Abrams was working on The secret of us, released on June 21 and on which Swift worked Department for tortured poetsreleased in late April) and decided to go back to Swift’s apartment to play each other’s songs.

“We opened a bottle of wine and sang song after song in the kitchen and we were theater kids,” Abrams recalled that night, adding that they “ran around the center island” in the room, performing for each other.

In the midst of their antics, they began listening to “sketches” of songs sent to them by producer Aaron Dessner and heard the beginning of guitar strings for their song “Us.” which appears on Abrams’ latest release and features Swift, 34.

The singer-songwriters were so inspired that they immediately started writing a song.

In the midst of their wine-writing session, which took place between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., Abrams told Lowe, 50, that she heard “creaking” from the kitchen, which Swift said was probably one of her cats.

However, when they finally returned to the kitchen, the “Risk” singer said that “the bonfire on her center island … is really a huge ball of flame.”

Abrams gave Swift a candle which they lit and forgot about in their excitement.

“It was so hot it snapped,” Abrams said of the candle with the “trunk” base. – And it was burning.

Swift knew where she kept a fire extinguisher in her house, and Abrams filmed the process of writing “Us.” So, of course, she pulled out her phone and started filming the “Fortnight” singer putting out the fire.

Abrams said that while she and Swift were not seriously injured, they were coughing for “weeks” after the fire and had minor burns from the wax.

“But ‘us’ came from that night, so it was a really good night,” Abrams said at the end of her story.

She opened for Swift last summer on the North American leg of the Eras tour, which Swift is currently performing in Europe. Abrams joined her on stage to perform “Us.” during part of the surprise song on Sunday in London.

Abrams’ interview with Lowe will be available Monday at 1pm on Apple Music 1.
