Graeme Souness Career
In April 1986, Souness replaced Jock Wallace as the first player-manager of Rangers after moving there for $300,000 from Sampdoria. A risky drive was started by Souness and club president David Holmes to recapture the footballing hegemony Rangers had previously lost.
Since Rangers last won the league championship in 1978, Celtic and the burgeoning “New Firm” of Aberdeen and Dundee United have won all of Scotland’s league championships. Lawrence Marlborough, the club’s previous owner, provided the initial funding for the initiative.
What became known as the “Souness Revolution” got its start with a number of key signings from English clubs. Because it disrupted a long-standing pattern of Scotland’s top footballers playing in England, this was important.
Among his first signings were Ipswich Town captain Terry Butcher and backup custodian Chris Woods from Norwich City, both of whom had experience playing for England.
Under Souness, Rangers was given fresh energy and quickly seized dominance of Scottish football. In his first season, 1986–1987, they defeated Celtic 2-1 in the championship game and won the League Cup and the Championship.
They defended the League Cup in 1987–88, defeating Aberdeen on penalties following extra time, despite losing the league championship to Celtic. Although Souness’ Liverpool teammate Dalglish quit as the club’s manager in February 1991, Liverpool had won three league titles and two FA Cups in the preceding five seasons and were still in the contention for both trophies.
Longtime coach Ronnie Moran was selected as interim charge after Dalglish’s surprise resignation, but he had little interest in the role being filled permanently.
Souness departed Rangers with four games remaining in the season on April 16 after signing a five-year contract to become manager of Liverpool. Souness once again succeeded in causing a commotion when he was appointed manager of Galatasaray in Turkey in June 1995.
He nearly started a riot by hoisting a big Galatasaray flag in the middle of Fenerbahçe’s pitch on April 24, 1996, after Galatasaray had won the Turkish Cup final against their rivals Fenerbahçe.
After that, Souness returned to England to manage Southampton, although he resigned after only one season as a result of differences with chairman Rupert Lowe.
After his spell at Southampton, Souness moved back to Italy to take the coaching position at Torino. When he came, it was clear that the club’s owner would decide all player-related matters without consulting him.
Souness was chosen by Joo Vale e Azevedo, the club’s new chairman, in November 1997 with the goal of returning Benfica to its former glory.
Blackburn Rovers got promoted back to the Premier League in Souness’ first full season as the team’s manager after he returned to the English league in March 2000. Souness left Blackburn to become manager of Newcastle United when Sir Bobby Robson, 71, was fired a few games into the 2004–05 campaign.
