Grandma, 71, Dies After Man Crashes Car into Her Apartment amid Suspected Medical Emergency

A grandmother died after a car crashed into her apartment building in Garland, Texas on Tuesday.

Police said the man was driving a Buick LeSabre near Fieldcrest Drive and Jupiter Road after 9 a.m. local time when he lost control of the vehicle during a suspected medical episode, according to Dallas morning news and ABC affiliate WFAA-TV.

The driver hit another car before continuing through the entrance to the complex and crashing into a building in the 1700 block of North Jupiter Road, Morning news and NBC affiliate KXAS-TV reported.

According to reports, Plautila Aguirre, 71, was in the first floor apartment when the Buick hit. She was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.

The Garland Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Elda Deleon, Aguirre’s daughter, described her mother to KXAS-TV as a “sweet person” who always had “a lot of friends.”

“Tough. Really tough because nobody’s ready for this day,” Deleon said. She later added, “Wherever [Aguirre is] and, wherever he goes, he has a smile for everyone, he tries to help everyone.”
