Grandma Who Charges Family for Christmas Dinner Explains Why She’s Raising Her Prices

Grandma raises the price of Christmas dinner for her family members.

Caroline Duddridge has been asking relatives to pay for her holiday meal since her husband died in 2015, she told BBC Radio 5 Live. Rising food prices and the increased cost of living mean they will be charged more this weekend than ever before.

In 2022, the Wales native made her grown sons pay £15 each (which is about $19.05). Her three daughters had to pay £10 ($12.70), and she even charged for her grandchildren. Those older than 5 owed 5 pounds ($6.35), and her three-year-old grandchildren owed 2.50 pounds ($3.17), writes the BBC.

Duddridge, 63, is asking her relatives to put the money straight into her bank account so she can “catch up on all the backlogs”.

She explained that the price difference had to do with her children’s careers. Her sons work full time and her daughters work part time and also have to pay the dinner bills for their children. This December, Duddridge is upping the bill for some of his guests.

“I raised the prices of the girls [this year] for 2 pounds because I got a little bit of an attack from people saying I’m sexist — not listening to public opinion, especially,” she said of her fee, which is $2.54. She added that the increased fee may not even cover everyone “appalling” supermarket costs.

Duddridge is comforted by the fact that groceries can be spread over several holiday meals. In previous years, she prepared a sandwich spread and turkey dinner on Christmas Eve, and a large buffet on Christmas.

When news of her tactics spread in previous years, many people were critical of her choice to charge the family. But she said many people online applauded her decision.

“There were the usual trolls, but some people thought it was a really good idea – they even said they would adopt it themselves,” she told the BBC.
