Great British Bake Off viewers saying same thing as Alison Hammond makes hosting debut

The Great British Bake Off returned to our screens on Tuesday night, marking Alison Hammond’s co-hosting debut – and viewers gave their verdict on her new gig.

The This Morning star joined fellow presenter Noel Fielding and judges Paul Hollywood and Dame Prue Leith in the iconic white marquee to welcome a fresh batch of baking hopefuls to the competition.

Viewers have taken to Twitter, now X, to share their thoughts on Alison’s introduction to the hit Channel 4 program – and it’s safe to say the Birmingham-born star caused a stir among fans.

One person wrote: “Alison Hammond is the best best best thing to happen to GBBO since moving to channel four. I’m so HAPPY. This series is off to a great start. #GBBO2023,” while another added: “Alison Hammond is he really brought some sunshine and joy to the tent! Love her so much #GBBO.”

A third person commented: “So happy @BritishBakeOff is back and I absolutely adore Alison Hammond,” while another tweeted: “#GBBO was an absolute joy tonight. Alison Hammond looks like she’s been in a tent for years and clearly loves it. A great batch of bakers this year should be a top series.”

Alison takes over from comedian Matt Lucas, who announced his departure from the show last December after three seasons.

Matt, who joined the show in 2020, attributed his decision to his busy schedule. “But it became clear to me that I couldn’t present Fantasy Football League and Bake Off alongside all my other projects,” he said in a statement. “So after three series and 51 episodes, I’m happily passing the baguette on to someone else.”

So what happened in the first episode?

The series 14 premiere saw 12 new bakers enter the tent, including 27-year-old Tasha from Bristol, who is the series’ first deaf contestant.

  • In the first episode, the bakers are faced with a series of tricky tasks, including making a cake with vertical layers for the Signature challenge and for Technical, recreating the iconic Bake Off cake – the raspberry scallop seen at the end of the show’s opening credits.

As for Showstopper, contestants were required to create a cake shaped and decorated like an animal, with some of the designs including a tahini-flavored Robin and a beaver named Norman.
