El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen passed away on January 17, 2023. On Tuesday afternoon, the City of El Paso took to Twitter to share the devastating news. The City of El Paso is heartbroken to announce the death of longtime Police Chief Greg Allen, they said. The cause of Allen’s death has not been revealed. However, Greg was in the hospital recovering from a medical procedure, according to KTSM.
After the tragedy, tributes poured in from around the world. El Paso firefighters sent a touching message. “Our hearts and prayers are with Chief Allen’s loved ones, as well as our brothers and sisters at the El Paso Police Department,” the Fire Department said on Twitter. They also saluted the late celebrity for his community service, knowledge and friendship. “Rest in peace, sir,” they continued. Similarly, Township Manager Tommy Gonzalez shared his grief, saying it was painful for them.
Greg Allen’s professional career
Greg Allen was born about 1950. During his 40 years of work in the agency, he held various positions (constable, sergeant, lieutenant, deputy chief, etc.). He served in the Tactical Division and SWAT as a field officer and supervisor for many years. He was the first and only permanent supervisor of the SWAT unit. Allen earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1975.
In 1995, he was inducted into the El Paso Boxing and Martial Arts Hall of Fame as an honorary member.
