The ITV show’s medic appeared on screen to break the news that Greg had been injured in a “really bad accident” during rehearsals.

But now Greg has shared the news with fans after being released from hospital.

Tucked away in bed, a shirtless Greg wrote: “Recovery is kind of starting now… after a pretty rough first night, looking forward to getting everything sorted and stitched up so I can get back to normal.

“Thank you all so much for the kind messages,” he added with a heart in love emoticon.

He still hasn’t revealed the details of the injury that caused him to leave the show.

On Sunday night, just hours after Greg’s dramatic news, his partner Susie updated worried fans on her Instagram story.

Posting a photo of Greg in a hospital bed, she wrote: “Not exactly how @gregjrutherford expected to spend today.

“Thank you for all your kind messages.”

Susie added alongside the video: “Resus is never a fun place is it. Lots of screaming 🙁 (Not from Greg).”

Just hours after the accident, Greg posted a video from his hospital bed, where he was hooked up to machines.

He thanked his fans for their messages, saying he was ‘overwhelmed’ by the support.

“But my message is for the three amazing finalists who will be skating soon. Have an amazing night guys.

“I’ve absolutely loved every minute of this journey with you, I’m devastated that I can’t be with you tonight.

“I’ve loved watching all your windows unfold, it’s going to be amazing. Love you all, hope to see you soon.”

Former Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas won the show alongside his professional partner Amani Fancy.

After being declared the winner, he dedicated his trophy to Greg.

“Listen, Greg, if you’re watching this at home, this trophy is for you, my friend,” he said.

He beat Made in Chelsea star Miles Nazaire (28) and Radio One DJ Adele Roberts (45) in a tense final.

Ryan was paired with newcomer Amani Fancy on her debut on the UK series, and she thanked her for getting him through to the series final.

The TV star said: “I am speechless!”

He continued: “I just can’t, it’s Amani, I’m happy for her because she’s put in so much effort with me.

Speaking about Greg’s injury, an ITV spokesperson said: “Greg and Vanessa have been such a popular couple in this series and have performed some truly memorable routines.

“We will help support Greg and wish him a good recovery. We also want to thank him for being such a valued member of the Ice Dance family,” the broadcaster added.
