Grey’s Anatomy: Bailey’s 5 Rules Explained as She Takes Over Charge of the Interns

Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) is back in charge of the interns at Gray Sloan Memorial!

Season 20 premiere Grey’s Anatomy saw Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) leave the interns in the “very capable hands” of Bailey after he decided to move to Boston to be with Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo).

Longtime fans of the show know this isn’t her first time hanging out with the interns, and she even introduced herself to the new class with her iconic line from the pilot: “I have five rules.”

In the 2005 episode, Bailey wasted no time in being kind when she introduced herself to the OG interns including Meredith, Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and George O’Malley (TR Knight).

“I have five rules, learn them by heart,” she told the interns. “Rule number don’t creep in, I already hate you, that’s not going to change, trauma protocol…nurses will be calling you, you’ll answer every page immediately run. Run, that’s rule number two.”

“Your first shift starts now and lasts 48 hours. You are the interns, the grunts, the scoundrels, the bottom of the surgical food chain,” she continued. “You run labs, write orders, work every second until you drop and don’t complain. Emergency rooms, doctors embrace them, sleep when you can where you can, which brings me to rule number three if I’m sleeping, don’t wake me unless your patient is actually dying.”

“Rule number four, a dying patient better not be dead when I get there, then not only would you kill someone, but you’d wake me up for no good reason, okay?”

After she finished speaking, Meredith remarked, “You said five rules, and there were only four.”

“Rule number five, when I move, you move,” she replied as the group ran to respond to the page.

New Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Meg Marinis opened up about the throwback moment on Thursday’s premiere, speaking Parade“We talked about where Bailey was coming from [winning a Catherine Fox Award] in her career. It is the biggest award among awards in our world. What many people don’t realize is that she won that award for her lecture on reproductive care. She is the teacher of all teachers.”

“Given where we left our interns at the end of last season, they need to bounce back from this one,” she continued. “When we looked at the stories, it made sense that there was only one person who could bring them back. She helped raise Meredith Grey, Cristina Yang, Isabel Stephens, Alexa [Karev] and George O’Malley. She was responsible for expelling these great surgeons. She’s the only one who can help the trainees come back from this low they’ve had.”

Marinis also teased that the show’s historic 20th season will return to OG Grey’s Anatomy.

“This is a celebration of the 20th season,” she explained. “We kind of nod to the foundations that Shonda [Rhimes] built. It’s nostalgic. It will be a nostalgic Bailey, but she has evolved.”

She added: “She’s taking on this job and this role that she had at the very beginning of the show, but with 20 years of experience.”
