Kevin McKidd knows that his character Owen Hunt and Cristina Yang have unfinished business Grey’s Anatomy.
The 50-year-old actor tells PEOPLE he would love to see Sandra Oh, who played Cristina for 10 seasons, return to the ABC medical drama after she left the series in 2013.
“I was just talking about it the other night, I said, ‘I feel like we should try to get Cristina back,'” he shares of his on-screen ex-wife. “Maybe it’s related to some heart transplant or something that has to come up or I don’t know.”

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ cast: Where are they now?
McKidd believes that a conversation between the former couple would be “complicated because there is so much love between Cristina and Owen, and when they said goodbye to each other, they didn’t really say goodbye the right way. It was kind of left hanging.”
“Cristina was upstairs in the gallery and Owen was stuck in the operating room, they literally just nodded at each other and she had to leave,” he adds. “So I think there’s a lot of history there to talk about.”
Along with many Grey’s Anatomy fans, Rome alum questions what Cristina would do now.
“I wonder if she is married now? Does she have a husband?” he asks. “I don’t think so. I think she’s still on that solid path and Owen is now happily married to Teddy, but there’s all this history between him and Cristina.”
“I think it would be an amazing episode, maybe Owen has to travel somewhere and here’s Cristina at a conference,” he suggests. “I don’t know, but I think it would make really great television.”

McKidd previously told PEOPLE that he is encouraging Oh, 52, to return to the hit series.
“I wish — and I always say this — I wish Sandra Oh would come back,” he told PEOPLE on Grey’s Anatomy 400th episode celebration in Hollywood May 2022 “I don’t think she will. She keeps saying she won’t. Every time I see her, I’m always poking her, saying ‘Come on, come on. Just one .’ Maybe one day she’ll say yes. I’m working on her all the time.”
“I think there’s a way to get her to do it one more time,” he continued. “She’s really an artist. And when she’s moving on, she’s moving on. So it’s not because of a bad feeling, she’s just moved on.”
“We’re really good friends too,” he added, before joking: “So Sandra, I’m coming for you.”

In 2021, Oh ruled out reprising her role Grey’s Anatomyexplaining on Los Angeles Times‘ podcast Asian enough that she “moved on”.
“It’s very rare, I would say, to be able to see the impact of a character in that way. In a way, you do your job like a balloon and let it go,” she added. “I left that show, my God, almost seven years ago. So in my mind, he’s gone. But for a lot of people, he’s still very much alive. And while I understand and love him, I’ve moved on.”
“I love it, though,” she added. “And that’s also why I really appreciate the show … that I still get asked that.”
