Griffin Santopietro, Dallas Dupree Young & Oona O’Brien Interview: Cobra Kai Season 5

cobra kai Season 5, which premieres on Netflix on September 9, will see the Karate Kid’s loyalties shift yet again as they switch dojos and teachers after the All-Valley Championship. Even though the protagonists have to go through personal problems and relationship crises, they have to overcome it all and become the best martial artists they can be. While some characters are struggling to overcome losses in the competition, or rejoice in their victories, others are dealing with entering the world of the dojo.

Despite the events of season four, Kenny (Dallas Dupree Young) has chosen to stay with Cobra Kai and is becoming one of Terry Silver’s star students. Devon (Oona O’Brien) went from Eagle Fang’s Johnny Genius to Cobra Kai’s Silver member, which means there could be a team-up in the near future. Hopefully, though, this isn’t a team against poor Anthony (Griffin Santopietro), who’s only now starting to train under the tutelage of his father, Daniel.

screen roar Chatting with Young, O’Brien and Santopietro about where they each were at the start of the project cobra kai In season five, who is their dream opponent and which star is their real-life teacher?

Screen Rant: Dallas, I’ll start with you. Has Kenny gone too far now? What difficulties has he encountered this season?

Dallas Dupree Young: Okay, we’ll be there in a minute! I would say, yes, maybe he went a little too far. He ended up getting Griffin in Season 4, so I think he hurt Griffin a little too much. You don’t need to do all this.

I think the competition has started to wane. I think he needs to calm down.

But was it fun having you and Griffin face-to-face?

Dallas Dupree Young: I had a lot of fun, though. I don’t want to change that. It was great for my character.

Griffin, many people are asking: Is there any chance Anthony will join the dojo training? Do you think this is something in his future?

Griffin Santopietro: I think now – especially because of Kenny and what happened in the locker room last season – that it’s necessary at this point. Unless Anthony wants to keep getting his ass kicked by Kenny, he’s going to have to learn something.

Oona, how would you describe Devin and Tori’s relationship this season? Because we have seen some pictures of them together. It seems like the two of them are going to be a bit of a team-mate. How is this going?

Oona O’Brien: Yeah, Devon found that she and Tori had a lot in common. She becomes Devon’s mentor, guiding her in the right direction.

We have a lot of emotional people on this show. Who was your starting teacher? Who can you turn to for advice?

Dallas Dupree Young: Personally, the answer that comes to mind is Terry Silver – Thomas Ian Griffith. He looks very much like our teacher, both in real life and on camera.

Whenever we made a mistake on a technique or a move, he made adjustments and let us know what we could do. Almost, if I throw a punch and I don’t rotate my hips – I remember this happened early in the season – he’s like, “Hey, Dallas. If you rotate your hips a little more, you’ll have more power.” It Really comes to life; that’s what I do. We discussed different techniques; how to continually grow and learn in karate.

Oona O’Brien: For me, it’s Johnny Lawrence -[William] Zabka. Whether it’s acting or karate, he always gives great advice. These guys have been doing this for a while and are pretty good at karate now. Therefore, they are always here to help you.

Griffin Santopietro: I think we’re all doing what our senses really are, but mine is definitely Ralph [Macchio]. Having worked with him for the past five years – mostly from an acting standpoint; I can’t say enough about karate yet. But from a professional standpoint, he was really helpful in teaching me stuff; I just started watching him and learning. He’s like my TV dad and I feel like I can come to him with any questions.

Is there anyone that you didn’t get a chance to fight, or someone that did have a lot of scenes that you’d love to have the opportunity to go head-to-head with in a future season?

Dallas Dupree Young: I would love to have a match with Miguel. I think that’s really cool; something different. He’s a lot like the Karate Kid from the story, so I thought it would be cool to fight him.

Griffin Santopietro: I think it’s only a matter of time before we get an Anthony Kerry battle. This could be a great climax. Anthony and Chris, we would both have swords and we would knock each other down. I think this will be a good ending.

Oona O’Brien: That makes sense. I would love to take down Kenny and Anthony. I think she could fight them both at the same time and take them all down. [Laughs]
