Varun Singh

Captain Varun Singh is a Captain in the Indian Air Force and served as an Instructor at the Defense Staff College (DSSC), Wellington, Tamil Nadu. He is a recipient of the Shaurya Chakra, the country’s third highest gallantry medal. Varun was the only survivor of the fatal helicopter crash on December 8, 2021, which killed CDS Bipin Rawat, Bipin’s wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 others on board. Varun passed away on December 15, 2021, at the Bengaluru Military Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for severe burns.

Profession

Singh joined the Indian Defense Forces in 2004 after passing the NDA examination. He served in the Indian Air Force with No. 27987 F(P). He is a test pilot of the IAF Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Squadron, Bengaluru. Varun was posted as Wing Commander on June 19, 2017 and was recently promoted to Group Captain, IAF, after which he started mentoring staff at the Defense Staff College (DSSC), Wellington, Tamil Nadu.

On August 15, 2021, President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the Shaurya Chakra on Varun Singh. Varun was then a Lieutenant Colonel of the Tejas Fighter Squadron of the Indian Air Force. He was commended for his composure and courage at the controls of his Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas during an air emergency during a sortie at Singh on October 12, 2020. According to the Indian Air Force, while Varun was flying at an altitude of about 10,000 feet, the aircraft experienced a system failure due to a major technical issue. This resulted in complete loss of control of the aircraft and the aircraft started to descend before Singh managed to regain control and land his Tejas safely. The Ministry of Defense revealed in an official statement that the cockpit failed to pressurize at high altitudes. It says:

he [Varun Singh] Correctly identified the malfunction and initiated descent to a lower altitude for landing. While descending, the flight control system malfunctioned, resulting in complete loss of control of the aircraft. This was an unprecedented catastrophic failure… Although he was under great physical and mental pressure in a life-threatening situation, he still maintained exemplary composure and regained control of the aircraft, thus demonstrating extraordinary flying skills. “

  • Captain Singh wrote a letter to school students on September 18, 2021, in which he revealed that he has been passionate about airplanes and aviation since he was a child. Varun also wrote in the letter that he was an average student who could not score Class 1 in 12th standard, adding:

    I was a very average student who barely managed to get first place in grade 12. Even though I was appointed Disciplinary Prefect in 12th class, I was mediocre even in sports and other extra-curricular activities. But I am passionate about airplanes and aviation. “

  • In his letter, he also talked about receiving a gallantry award. Singer wrote:

    I believe in this prestigious award [Shaurya Chakra] Thank you to everyone I have come into contact with over the years in school, NDA, and later in the Air Force, because I firmly believe that my actions that day were the result of the development and guidance of my teachers.
