‘Real Housewives of Miami’ star says ‘hair will fall out on my terms’ before starting chemotherapy for breast cancer
Before starting chemotherapy for breast cancer, Guerdy Abraira shaved her head with the help of her husband Russell, in an emotional moment during The Real Housewives of Miami season finale on Wednesday.
“I have had no control throughout this whole cancer journey,” said Guerdy, who shared her breast cancer diagnosis last May. “With chemotherapy, hair loss is one of the main side effects.”
Then she said, “The only thing I can control, I will, because that hair will fall out on my terms.”
Guerdy, who said her treatment will include surgery and chemotherapy, wrote on Instagram at the time that her cancer was “detected at an early stage.” She added, “[I]Of course, it’s still scary, but I have the love and support of the people around me and that’s all the fuel I need.”
During the episode, the event organizer parted her hair into a series of braids and explained that she would cut them off before Russell shaved her head.
“I wanted to thank you,” Guerdy, 46, told her husband of 21 years as he turned on the shaver.
“What, to shave your head?” Russell replied.
“No, just because I was there. Russell, I’m serious. I don’t know what I would do without you,” she said.
“What, all these years?” he teased before pulling her into a hug.
This year, 2 million people will be diagnosed with cancer — the most ever — due to rising cancer rates in the under-50s

“You’re my best friend,” she said, crying.
In her confessional, Guerdy explained: “Russell is my safe place. Russell is my refuge. Russell is my zone of peace and I appreciate and cherish that every day.”
Guerdy cut off the braids in the front while her husband took care of the rest of her head.
“You are the best,” she told him, crying.
During the process, Guerdy cried, before saying: “This is not happening. Oh my God. Is he bald? I’m like, bald-bald? It doesn’t matter at this point, I don’t care. Just do it. Oh my God, Russell.”

He paused and asked, “Are you ready?”
She nodded and he said, “You’ll look good.”
“You’re lying to me,” Guerdy said.
When he finished, Russell said, “Look at me. You are very beautiful. It doesn’t look bad at all. Trust me.”
“You look good,” he said with a smile.

Guerdy Abraira says it’s ‘disturbing’ that Larsa Pippen revealed her breast cancer diagnosis without permission
Guerdy — who was diagnosed with cancer before filming the new season of the show RHOM — said she was in a “blind spot, because I didn’t know that my cancer was going to be integrated into the issues in the story.”
However, her openness about her cancer journey has helped others, she said, sharing that hundreds of women have reached out to her since her diagnosis.
“If anything, I hope people watch the show and say, I’ll never ask questions. When someone tells me I have cancer, I’ll hug that person and say, ‘What do you need me to do?’ I’ll drop everything. I will show up for them and support them in the right way.”
The RHOM the star added: “Everything is destined in life. And this is where I need to be right now. So I’m very happy. I don’t have cancer… I’m doing everything I need to do to hopefully stay healthy. And I was in God’s hands.”

In an Instagram post released Thursday, Guerdy reflected on the emotional moment. “Sometimes even the people you trust the most tell you ‘you’re beautiful,’ and you’re not ready to accept it,” she wrote.
“That day, shaving my head wasn’t for style, it was for struggle and as I went out to meet the girls that night I put on a wig anyway because I was too vulnerable and didn’t want the ‘stare’ – I never understood the POWER OF BALD and baby, man, I love it,” she continued.
