He began playing cricket in his childhood and trained under the guidance of R66T Academy High Performance Director Shaun Seigert. In 2016, he moved to Adelaide, Australia, to train at the Darren Lehmann Cricket Academy.

Gus Atkinson played for Surrey Under-13s in 2011, Surrey Under-14s in 2012, Surrey Under-15s in 2013 and Surrey Under-17s in 2015 Potency. He also played school cricket for Bradfield Academy from 2013 to 2016, Bradfield Academy Under-17s in 2015 and for Bradfield Rovers in the 2017-18 Cricketers’ Cup team plays.
He played for Spencer Cricket Club in the Surrey Premier League in 2014 and 2016. In 2016, he started playing for the Surrey 21st team and the Surrey All-Stars team, and in 2018 he represented Hampshire and the Surrey 21st team in domestic competitions. He suffered three consecutive back stress fractures in 2017, 2018 and 2019, which affected his career. When he fully recovered from his injury, he began to make a name for himself on the domestic circuit.
On 8 August 2020, he made his first appearance for Surrey against Essex in the 2020 Bob Willis Cup. He made his Twenty20 debut on 28 August 2020 for Surrey against Sussex in the 2020 T20 Blast Championship.
He made his A-list debut for Surrey against Yorkshire on 22 July 2021 in the 2021 Royal London One-Day Cup. Atkinson was a member of the Surry team that won the 2022 County Championship.
