Gwyneth Paltrow ‘Stepped Away’ from Acting After Apple Was Born: ‘Everything Felt Redefined’ (Exclusive)

Gwyneth Paltrow reveals how motherhood has affected her career.

While speaking with PEOPLE for this week’s cover story, the Goop founder, 51, shared that she hasn’t been in a full movie since the birth of her 19-year-old daughter, Apple.

“Well, it’s kind of ironic because I really stepped away from acting when Apple was born,” Paltrow told PEOPLE about how motherhood has advanced her career. “The last time I was in every scene of a movie was when I was pregnant with her.”

“Once I had it, everything felt redefined and I thought, ‘I’m not sure if I want to do this as much as a career. I definitely don’t want to… I’m not going to go away for months on end.'”

Gwyneth Paltrow says daughter Apple’s ‘values are on point’: ‘Such an extremely good person’

Paltrow shares her two children – Apple and son Moses, 17 – with ex Chris Martin.

In October, the actress spoke with Stare about his daughter, who recently started college. “It’s so fun to have a daughter that age, especially because she loves clothes and leather and all that stuff,” Paltrow said.

“She’s more girly than me. She’s really good at makeup and loves doing it.”

When asked if her daughter is teaching her new skills, the proud mom said that although she doesn’t wear much makeup, she has learned something from Apple. “It’s great because she’s involved in the cool stuff, not the trashy, depressing part of our culture,” the actress explained.

“She is such an eminently sweet person, and her values are in the right place,” she told the news outlet.

In an Instagram Q&A in August, Paltrow opened up about being a stepmom to Brad Falchuk’s two children — son Brody, 17, and daughter Isabella, 19 — admitting “it was really hard at first.”

“You know, there’s no book about this; nobody’s telling us what to do. And really, all the media out there about being a stepmother casts us in this evil, evil light,” she continued, “So it’s kind of like trying to avoid landmines. And then you go into a family dynamic. And there’s all kinds of fear around losing and what does that person mean?”

Paltrow added, “But for me, the moment I decided and fully embodied the idea that my pastors were my children and I loved them equally and I gave them the same rules and boundaries, and I kind of went for it wholeheartedly, then made the whole thing easier. And now it’s pretty great.”
