Think of a bridal Madonna snaking her way down the enormous wedding cake at the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards, a moment that forever changed popular culture, or of Elizabeth Taylor’s eight wedding looks, including the one she wore to tie the knot with construction worker Larry Fortensky for the final time.
Other examples of the idea are more ethereal: shoulder-padded Krystle and Alexis Carrington in a number of infamous catfights; Jennifer Beals with her ‘Flashdance’ jumper suggestively exposing the shoulder; and the DKNY wall that, in its own unique way, was a love letter to New York City and once served as the entrance to SoHo.
Love is both mysterious and enchanting, according to Rubenstein, who spoke to CFDA.com. “I think my father was the most sensitive person. He expressed his affection in such a bold, open, and unreserved way. I have a certain naiveté since it completely altered the way I see the world. ‘Let’s look at the things that got us thrilled, the movies that influenced us, the music, and that fashion show that transformed the world,’ was how I felt.
The book presents a compelling argument that all of the aforementioned contained the concept of love. What could be more expressive than being able to dress in a way that asks someone if they find me special? Is my appeal to you? Added Rubenstein. “Seduction is the key to everything in life that matters. Seduction is the goal of clothing. I don’t only associate seduction with a low neckline. It’s about proclaiming one’s faith in beauty. Different designers have various concepts of beauty.
His favourite “looks of love” in the book include the 1950s Maidenform Bra commercial, the iconic James Dean in the black leather jacket photo, and the Liz and Larry picture with Michael Jackson in the background, as if Taylor had been saving his love for the King of Pop at the time.
Elizabeth is the best movie star and the most stunning woman to ever appear in a movie, according to Rubenstein. Here was a woman who, correctly or wrongly, always followed her heart and never asked anybody else’s permission or to look over her shoulder. For her, the only thing that counted was love.
Rubenstein wants readers to take a second look at these iconic incidents and their influence on culture. “When they saw Belle de Jour, or when Tom Cruise hopped on Oprah’s sofa, or when Madonna stood on the wedding cake, or when they saw Bonnie and Clyde…I want people to reflect back on those times, pause for a moment, and realise what was actually happening and how it affected how they perceived romance and beauty.
Rubenstein gladly remembers his very own “look of love” in a sartorial sense. He said, “I’ve been with someone for 19 years.” “I react the same way each time I see him. I wrote the book for this reason. Perhaps you are not in love if you can actually explain love.
Rubenstein recounted, “To this day, I remember what David was wearing when he stepped off the plane from Tulsa. “I disliked anything he was wearing. The shirt, coat, and jeans weren’t to my taste, but I didn’t care. His manner of walking gave off the impression that he was searching for me. I never disposed of the garments because of this. Everything we wore still belongs to me.
