The Little Mermaid said the 23-year-old actress Cosmopolitan (in an interview conducted before the actors’ strike) that the production of the upcoming movie musical “was beautifully Blackity Black.”
Bailey joins an all-star cast in the new film produced by Oprah Winfrey, who starred in the 1985 version directed by Steven Spielberg.
Directed by Blitz Bazawule, this adaptation features a cast that includes Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson, Louis Gossett Jr., Ciara, Corey Hawkins, David Alan Grier, Colman Domingo, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, HER, Jon Batiste and Deon Cole.
“The set was like going to a cookout — it felt like a family reunion, honestly, like you’re surrounded by your aunts and cousins,” Bailey said. “I was just excited to be there as a fan of everybody.”

The singer/actress had her say Color Purple the film is a “labor of love”.
She added, “We all really care about the original story and we really wanted to do a good job with this reimagining. People are going to lose their minds because of Fantasia’s and Taraji’s performances. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.”

“The reason I wanted to do it — and the reason I felt connected to it — is that it’s a beautiful sisterly relationship,” she said. “What it means when you’re away from each other and how heartbreaking it is, but also how special the moments you have together are.”
“I could draw on my own experience with my sister, who is my angel and my best friend. I couldn’t imagine what it would be like if we were separated the way Nettie and Celie were,” Bailey said of her sister and co-star Chloe. Bailey.

In her Cosmopolitan “The Breakdown” video on Tuesday, Bailey said she was “beyond excited to join” the production, “especially when she heard it was going to be a wonderful musical adaptation that I would be able to incorporate my love of music into.”
“I actually have to write an original song for the film as well, so I can’t wait,” she added. “It’s just a combination of all the things I love and the stories that are so important to us.”
A press release called the film “a bold new take on a beloved classic” about the “extraordinary sisterhood of three women who share an unbreakable bond.”
Purple it’s in theaters on December 25.
