Political career
Hamza began his political career in 2011 after being selected as the general secretary of Punjab by the Pakistan Muslim League (N). In 2008, he contested Pakistan’s general election as an independent candidate but failed to win a seat. In 2008, he was selected as the Pakistan Muslim League (N) candidate for the National Assembly of Pakistan. In 2013 and 2018, he was re-elected to the National Assembly as a PML-N candidate. In 2018, he was also elected as a member of the Punjab Provincial Assembly as a PML-N candidate in the Pakistani general election. On August 13, 2018, he was nominated by the PML-N to serve as chief minister of Punjab, but failed to win the seat. On August 25, 2018, he was nominated by the PML-N as the Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly and was appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly on September 6, 2018. He is currently the Vice Chairman of Pakistan Muslim League (N) since May 2019. As leader of the opposition, Hamza proposed various initiatives to improve education and health. He founded women’s colleges, model hospitals and restored historical monuments in Goval Mandi and Jonna Mandi.

On June 11, 2019, Hamza was charged with money laundering and illegal possession of assets and arrested by the National Accountability Bureau on corruption charges.

In 2021, Hamza was accused of transferring Rs. $16.3 billion through 28 Benami accounts. According to the agency, the accounts belonged to 11 employees of Sharif Group. Hamza and his father were arrested in 2021 in connection with the case.
