- On October 2, 2018, her husband, Jamal Khashoggi, went to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey to get a divorce certificate; a document that would have allowed him to marry Hatice Cengiz. However, he was assassinated by the Saudi government at the consulate. She said in an interview about the murder,
I am sure that if they knew the truth about Jamal and I was allowed to tell his information and the truth, they would regret what they did to my husband.”
- She thanked US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris after his administration held Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman accountable for Jamal’s murder.
