Hanuma Vihari was born on October 13, 1993 in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. When Vihari was just nine years old, his father took him to the Gymkhana Stadium in Hyderabad to watch Ambati Rayudu bat. From then on, he was determined to play cricket. According to her mother, he left home at a very young age to pursue his cricket career. When he was 12 years old, he lost his father. He is also known as Karna.

Vihari made his domestic cricket debut for Hyderabad in 2009 when he was just 16 years old. In the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy, he scored his first triple hundred against Odisha with 302 runs.
Vihari was a member of the India Under-19 cricket team that won the 2012 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Australia.
In 2013, he represented Sunrisers Hyderabad in the sixth season of IPL. He remained a member of the team until 2015.
In August 2018, he was called up to the Indian cricket team squad for the last two Test matches against England. He made his debut against England on September 7, 2018. In his debut match, he scored 56 runs in the first innings.
