Happy Gilmore Came Out 28 Years Ago — and Star Julie Bowen Says Her Kids Finally Watched It 'Just Last Night'

Almost three decades have passed since then Happy Gilmore debuted, and the Adam Sandler-led golf comedy is finally getting a sequel. But Julie Bowen, who played Virginia Venit, says her children only saw the original film for the first time.

“They’ve never seen anything I’ve done,” Bowen, 54, told Sherri Shepherd on the Oct. 17, 2024, episode of her show. The actress shares sons Oliver, 17, and twins John and Gustave, 15, with ex-husband Scott Phillips.

“They heard I was in my underwear with two jugs of beer – which is true, but it’s not sexy, it’s more funny, it’s a bit silly,” she continued.

She admitted that her sons were excited about the upcoming sequel “because they’re friends of theirs” — and that one of her son’s friends finally sat down to get him to watch the original.

“Just last night, one of them was watching it,” Bowen told Shepherd excitedly. ‘I haven’t got a review yet and his friend sent it to me on Snapchat.’

Although she couldn’t share her son’s reaction during the interview, Bowen admitted that her son’s friend didn’t even recognize her in the Happy Gilmore.

“He did [my son] he watched it and liked it, but he said to me: ‘Who are you in it?’ “, she said while jokingly trying to recreate her photo from the movie. “He couldn’t believe it was me.”

Bowen has already confirmed that he will reprise his role in the upcoming sequel – and that Virginia and Happy are still very much together. Christopher McDonald, who played hotshot golfer Shooter McGavin, will also return for Happy Gilmore 2.

Stars such as Bad Bunny and Travis Kelce have also been confirmed as additions to the cast, although there is still little information on what the film’s plot might be. Despite never playing golf before being cast in the film, Margaret Qualley will also make an appearance.

Sandler has been pulling in stars left and right for this sequel, although Nick Swardson (who has been optioned for the film) has previously said that the final script has yet to be ironed out, despite the looming shooting date.

“It’s the most Sandler thing ever,” Swardson said.

The jury is still out on whether Henry Winkler, who has worked with Sandler on several projects over the years, will appear in Happy Gilmore 2 — although Winkler recently admitted that he did Sandler last-minute favors for just a “cookie.”

“I am Water boy. He called me in the middle of the night. He said, ‘Henry, I need a favor. My actor didn’t show up. I need you to drive to the park right now,” Winkler said. “He’s in LA, it’s 11:30 at night. I go and say, ‘Okay.’ I’m shaving. I drive. I’m going. I’m sitting. I put on my makeup until 3:30 in the morning. Do you know what I got? cookie.”
