Hari Sahni contested the 2015 Bihar Legislative Assembly elections from Bahadurpur on behalf of the BJP but lost. He is the district president and in-charge of Darbhanga district of the BJP. Hari Sahni is the leader of the Economically Backward Classes (EBC). In 2020, he was nominated as candidate from Darbhanga Kooti but withdrew after the party chose to field Brahmin candidate Murari Mohan Jha to maintain representational balance in the region election. The party later won in Keoti constituency and appointed Hari Sahni as member of the Bihar Legislative Council (MLC) for 2022. Hari Sahni is also campaigning for the 2022 Kurhani by-elections. In August 2023, he replaced Samrat Chaudhary as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Bihar Legislative Council.
