Tape ball cricket is a cricket drill in which a tennis ball is wrapped with tape to change its movement in the air. Recalling that time, Harris Rauf told a local channel,
“Lahore Qalandars ka trial tha aur Tarif bhai (coach) quick gun leke khade huye the (This is a trial of Qalandars in Lahore, with Tarif bhai standing with a speed gun). Ek banda 87 mari, toh mein socha mere ko is se zyada tez dalna hai (Someone hits the ball at 87 mph, so I guess I have to be faster than him). Toh spike ball darla, speed gun 88 dikhaya (So when I was bowling, the speedometer read 88 mph). Tabhi mere ko next round jane ka mauka mila (It was only then that I qualified for the next round). “
In 2019, he was bought by the Melbourne team to play in the Big Bash League (BBL), replacing injured former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn. This was his debut season and he picked 20 wickets.
He then performed well in the PSL (Pakistan Super League) and BBL seasons.
Therefore, he was selected for the national team in January 2020. His first international match was a T20 match against Bangladesh on January 24 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. In that match, he scored 32 runs and took one wicket of batsman Afif Hossain; nine runs were bowled. He is also obsessed with playing against their star opener Tamim Iqbal. Pakistan won the match by five wickets.
A few months later in June 2020, he was selected in the Pakistan team for the tour of England. However, when he tested positive for the coronavirus, he and two other players from the Pakistan team were left out of the squad. He made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe on 30 October 2020 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. In this match, he did not take any wickets and conceded 57 runs in ten overs with an economy rate of 5.7. However, Pakistan won the match by 26 runs and took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Two days later, he scored his maiden wicket off captain Chamu Chibhabha; being caught behind. Pakistan won the match by six wickets.
He took three wickets in the next two games of the series. His best bowling performance came against England on July 13, 2021, when he conceded 65 runs in nine overs and took four wickets. Pakistan batted first and scored 331 runs. In reply, Haris Rauf dismissed their top order batsmen Phil Salt and Zak Crawley while scoring 104 runs. He soon took the wicket of their centurion batsman James Vince. However, England won the match with 12 balls remaining.
In July 2021, he was rated as Category C Central Contract Player for 2020-21 by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Harris said in an official press release issued by PCB,
“I’m delighted to get the news at Derby County and of course I’ll use it as motivation for this year.”
Soon, he was named in Pakistan’s squad for the 2021 T20 World Cup in September. Pakistan’s first match will be against arch-rival India on October 24, 2021. After batting first, India put 151 runs on the board and lost 7 wickets. Haris Rauf conceded 25 runs in four overs with an economy rate of 6.25 and took a wicket off Hardik Pandya. Pakistan won this historic match by ten wickets.
Their next game is against the Kiwis in Sharjah on October 26. New Zealand were well on their way when Haris Rauf dismissed their star opening batsman Martin Guptill for 17 in the sixth over. He didn’t stop here. He went on to snatch three more wickets from Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips and Mitchell Santner while conceding 22 runs, saving 5.5 runs per over. Pakistan once again won this match by five wickets and secured their place in the semi-finals.
Until October 2021, he played 8 ODI games, took 14 wickets, and had a career economy rate of 5.97. Most of his wickets came in England. Interestingly, his away record is better than his home record, unlike other Asian bowlers who have 13 wickets. He has only played under Babar Azam in this format of the game. Prior to this, he also played 27 T20I games, taking 35 wickets with an economy rate of 8.58. He took the most wickets (9 wickets) against New Zealand.
