At the age of 23, Harjot became the founding president of the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab. During the 2013 Delhi Assembly elections, Harjot Singh informally led a small team to run Hari Nagar and Tilak Nagar constituencies, which the party later won. After becoming the largest party in Delhi and forming the government in 2013, the party began to take root in Punjab. In May-June 2013, Harjot Singh Bains was appointed as the convener of the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab. In 2017, Harjot Singh Bains contested the Legislative Assembly elections from Sachnewal constituency under the name of Aam Aadmi Party. Baines lost the election, receiving 39,000 votes. Sharanjit Singh Dhillon of Shiromani Akali Dal won the election. Soon, he became the spokesperson of the Aam Aadmi Party and a member of the national executive committee of AAP.
Punjab Assembly Elections 2022
Harjot Singh Bains is contesting the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections from Anandpur Sahib Assembly constituency on behalf of the Aam Aadmi Party.
He won the election by 45,780 votes, defeating Indian National Congress MP Kanwarpal Singh Rana. The party secured a majority in Punjab by winning 92 out of 117 seats in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections, with Bhagwant Mann sworn in as the Chief Minister of Punjab on March 16, 2022 minister.
On October 14, 2022, Harjot Singh Bains was appointed as the AAP Himachal Pradesh in-charge for the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections.

After the Aam Aadmi Party came to power in Punjab in 2022, Baines was included in the Mann Ministry cabinet. He was sworn in as a Cabinet Minister on March 19, 2023, at Guru Nanak Dev Auditorium, Punjab Raj Bhavan, Chandigarh.
He was appointed in charge of four departments, namely:
- Department of Laws and Regulations
- Department of Mining and Geology
- Ministry of Tourism and Culture
In May 2022, Harjot Singh, who is in charge of prison affairs, announced that prison wardens would be held responsible for the illegal use of mobile phones by prisoners in prisons. A month later, Bains announced that around 1,000 mobile phones had been seized from Punjab jails since the AAP government came to power in Punjab. Harjot also claimed that the government is continuously working to modernize prisons and is recruiting about 1,000 prison wardens to fill vacant positions. He also worked to transform prisons into real “sudhar ghars” (correctional facilities).
Baines also claimed that during his time as prisons minister, luxury facilities were not provided for certain high-profile prisoners as had been the case under previous governments. Harjot Singh Bains, head of the mines ministry, introduced stricter mining regulations. Several regulations have been framed to influence the sand mafia in the Punjab region. After about three-and-a-half months in the role, Baines was appointed to the higher education and school education ministries when the two portfolios were eliminated in a cabinet reshuffle.
