Harlan Crow News
Dallas billionaire and Republican megadonor Harlan Crow has many influential connections. His expensive secret trips with Justice Clarence Thomas sparked a heated debate over Supreme Court ethics.
The billionaire real estate mogul has donated $14.7 million to candidates and campaign organizations over the past three decades, with at least $13 million going to Republicans.
The list of recipients of the gifts revealed in federal and state records reads like a who’s who of Republicans in the US House and Senate, including the last three governors of Texas, the last four senators from the state.
Crow has invested a significant amount of money in Austin Gov. Greg Abbott, a total of $216,800, starting with $20,000 in late 2001 when Abbott was running for attorney general as a former Texas Supreme Court justice. Texas has no gift limit, unlike federal law, so large checks are common. Crow’s spending is hard to parse for patterns.
Donations to some of the most radical Republicans on the ballot, as well as to moderates in both parties, can be seen in the records of the Federal Election Commission and OpenSecrets, two organizations that track political donations.
Rep. Henry Cuellar of Laredo, a target of the Republican Party’s House campaign arm to whom Crow donated $1.4 million, has received $20,000 from Crow in the past three years.
Cuellar is the only Texas Democrat in Congress to be on Crow’s donation list, is one of the most conservative Democrats in Congress and is a senior member of the Appropriations Committee.
In addition, Crow gave $25,000 to Rep. Tony Gonzales of San Antonio, the most centrist Texas Republican serving in Congress. Of Texas’ 25 House Republicans, he is one of 14 to count Crow as a donor.
Louie Gohmert, an outspoken member of the Tyler Tea Party who left Congress in January, was Crow’s biggest opponent in 2012 alone.
He also endorsed Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah and Jon Huntsman Jr., a former governor and ambassador to China under Democratic President Barack Obama.
Crow donated $1.1 million to the Republican National Committee and $700,000 to the Republican National Senate Committee, which supports Senate candidates.
