Neighbors reported “a man and a woman yelling” as officers arrived at Bywater Place after a man allegedly tried to break into the home.

Two residents were injured during the incident before the attacker threatened officers and armed police were called.

In dramatic scenes, the man managed to get into the house before being shot dead by officers.

An eyewitness managed to capture the moment when the police surrounded the attacker moments before he was killed.

Metropolitan Police officers and paramedics administered first aid but the man, believed to be in his 30s, died at the scene.

His next of kin have not yet been notified.

Weapons, including crossbow arrows, were strewn across the road today as police set up a cordon and forensics officers attended.

Meanwhile, aerial images show objects, including water bottles, covering the pavement outside the address with crime scene markers placed next to them.

Steve Cornish, 70, who lives nearby, told The Sun residents were “in shock” after the shooting.

He added: “There have been incidents here before – stabbings and fights, but nothing like this.

“You get your standard crime in this area, but much lower than other parts of London. This cul-de-sac in particular, it’s very, very quiet.”

Resident Akbar Beloch, 53, said he heard banging around 5am and thought someone was trying to break into his car.

He added: “I heard a man and a woman shouting and I was sleeping on and off. Then a few minutes later we heard police sirens and all this noise.”

Valeria Bocanegra, 37, who also heard people screaming, told The Telegraph: “It was a woman and a man and I thought it was a couple fighting.”

DCS Seb Adjei-Addoh, from Southwark’s Met Police, said: “My thoughts are with all those affected by this incident.

“Armed officers are highly trained and patrol the streets of London every day, dealing with challenging, fast-paced and often dangerous situations to try and protect the public and their unarmed colleagues.

“They very rarely fire their weapons and all officers understand that and expect that when they do, their actions will be scrutinized.”

The Directorate for Professional Standards of the Met was notified.

The incident was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which launched an independent investigation.
