Harsha was born into a Hindu family and was an ardent follower of the Hindu god Rama. In an interview after his murder, her sister said,
My brother was a Hindu… he died shouting Jai Shri Ram”.

Amid the Karnataka hijab dispute 2022, Harsha was stabbed to death by unidentified persons on February 20, 2022, in Bharati Nagar, Shivamogga district, Karnataka. Although Harsha was rushed to Shimoga Megan Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. In January 2022, a dispute broke out in Karnataka after some Muslim students were denied access to classes at a junior college after being asked to wear hijab in a classroom. Karnataka Rural Development Minister and Panchayati Raj KS Eshwarappa accused Muslims of involvement in the murder of Bajrang Dal activists. Eshwarappa has been criticized for his right-wing political views against Muslims. Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar while addressing the media talked about Eshwarappa and said:
he [Eshwarappa] It brings shame to the country and the flag… It (Harsha’s killing) has nothing to do with the hijab issue. This is the result of a personal feud between two groups… The police must investigate this incident thoroughly. “
As of February 25, 2022, the Karnataka police have detained Mohammed Kashif, Sayed Nadeem, Afsifullah Khan, Rehan Sharef, Nihan and Abdul Afnan for the murder of Harsha in Shivamogga. The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has accused the Popular Front of India (PFI) and the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) of murdering Harsha with ulterior motives to spread terror in Karnataka.
