Health Benefits of Taurine: Leading a recent study, Dr. Vijay Yadav suggests that taurine, a well-known dietary supplement, could potentially contribute to a longer and healthier life. Jagran New Media Editor-in-Chief and Senior Vice President, Rajesh Upadhyay discussed how taurine protects against the cellular changes that cause aging with Dr. Vijay on the Columbia University Irving Medical Center campus.

dr. Yadav says the study observed that taurine levels in mice, monkeys and humans decrease with age. Administration of taurine reversed this deficit, increasing the duration of health and lifespan in mice and the duration of health in monkeys. Taurine protects against cellular changes that cause aging.

The effect of taurine on aging

As human society ages, it leads to changes in our molecular makeup. Whether these changes act as catalysts for aging or merely accompany it is not fully understood. dr. Vijay Yadav says: “So to identify molecules that change with age and may contribute to the aging process, we looked in older people through a blood test to see if there are molecules that change with age and may be involved in the aging process. This study showed that taurine is one of the molecules whose regulation is greatly reduced in older people. That is why we became interested in this molecule to see what it is and whether it regulates the aging process.”

Back in 2012, Dr. Yadav was researching the role of taurine in the aging process. They helped people if taurine levels and metabolite levels correlated with health in 60-year-old people. To do this, they examined 12,000 people with their longitudinal health data and measured the levels of taurine and metabolites in their bloodstream. They found that people who had high levels of taurine had lower obesity, lower BMI, less liver damage, less inflammation and lower hypertension.

Overall health is improved compared to people who have low levels, so together all these studies from lower species to higher species of humans tell us that taurine deficiency is a driver of aging because reversing this deficiency leads to longer lifespans and length of health in different species.
