But she broke the sad news about Julian Spear on social media, saying he had suffered a “sudden massive brain haemorrhage”.

Writing on Instagram, Carol said: “I am deeply sorry to announce that today, December 9th, we lost my wonderful husband, Julian Spear.

“A man in perfect shape, but yesterday he jumped into an icy outdoor pool that he assumed was heated as usual, and suffered a sudden massive brain bleed – our hearts ache.”

She added: “Married 47 years – known 56. Forgive me if I haven’t been on Facebook for a while.”

The soap legend joined Corrie as Anthea Deering – Joel Deering’s (Calum Lil) disapproving mother – this summer.

Anthea has arrived in Weatherfield to meet her son’s girlfriend, DeeDee (Channique Sterling-Brown) at a bistro.

Unfortunately, the pair’s date didn’t end well as their conversation led to an angry DeeDee storming out after a harsh Anthea made a comment about her family.

Carol’s other television work includes appearing in multiple episodes of Casualty, Doctors and The Bill, playing different characters in various episodes of all three series.

She also became a vegetarian in 1973 and campaigns against factory farming and the fur trade.

Her husband Julian was a musician and the son of actor Bernard who appeared in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
