But after the tragic accident during the celebrations in Western Australia on Sunday night, the British officer suffered a cut to the carotid artery in his neck which resulted in severe bleeding.

Lilly, who is a nurse, the paramedics and police officers who attended the fight did everything they could to save Liam’s life, but his injuries were too severe.

On Wednesday, the devastated lover opened up about her pain, saying her fiance was “really excited to be a dad”.

She told Daily Mail Australia: “I’ve never known love like Liam’s and the heartbreak and emptiness is just overwhelming.

“He will always be the love of my life and our child will know what a wonderful man he was.”

Liam took part in the BBC series Wanted Down Under, giving the teenager advice about life in Australia before they emigrated.

However, it appears that his scenes were never used.

He moved from the UK to Australia when he was still a teenager and later graduated from the Joondalup Police Academy.

The Brit then joined the Gang Squad and the Tactical Response Team, where he built his career as an exemplary officer.

In 2017, Liam moved to Kalgoorlie – about 370 miles east of Perth – where he became a prominent member of the community while playing for the local rugby team.

Lilly’s close friend Mel Kelly started a GoFundMe page earlier Wednesday to raise money for the mom-to-be.

She said Lilly had lost her “soul mate” and now may be raising her baby alone trying to make ends meet.

The fundraiser said: “Lilly’s world was shattered by a freak accident that took the life of her beloved fiancé.

“The evening was meant to be a joyous celebration of Lilly and Liam’s recent engagement and pregnancy announcement, a huge milestone in their journey together.

“Friends and family gathered to share their happiness. In a cruel twist of events, Liam’s life was cut short, leaving behind a void that can never be filled.

“Lilly, a dedicated clinical registered nurse at Royal Perth Hospital, is now navigating uncharted waters.

“Not only has she lost her soul mate, but she also carries within her the precious gift of a new life.

“Nearly 14 weeks pregnant, Lilly now faces the prospect of raising a child without her loving partner, while also grappling with the financial responsibilities that come with home ownership.”

Friends and colleagues took to social media to pay tribute to Liam in the days following his death.

One friend described him as “perhaps the fittest guy” in the local trekking group.

They wrote: “Great sense of humor with a passion to shine.

“In my opinion, society can hardly afford to lose guys like Liam [who had] the courage to put in the furnace every day, to face the ‘hard side’ of police work.

“The boys have been injured this week but have continued with big training and domestic operations.”

Another shared: “It’s been a sad few days at the office.

“Lots of hugs and lots of tears. But … the guys are getting on with it and getting stuck into their training. Hopefully it’s a good distraction.”

A third friend commented: “He’s been like that since day one [police] academy – you couldn’t help but love him.”

His colleagues in the WA Police Union remember him as an “outstanding officer” and a “valued member of the blue family”.

Police Commissioner Colonel Blanch, Western Australia’s police commissioner, said: “Every effort was made to try to save her, but it was not to be, and I know everyone involved is really hurt.

“I think they wish they could wake up from this nightmare.”

“This outstanding police officer loved helping the community and was a great example of WA policing and it’s a real tragedy,” Mr Blanch said.

“[He was] a very, very confident, capable young man with his whole life ahead of him, and that’s how sad this is.

– Now it is important for us to wrap ourselves around each other, to lean on each other.

The exact cause of the accident has not been confirmed.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
