Philip John Fleck Jr., often known as PJ Fleck, is an American football coach and former wide receiver. Since 2017, he has been the head coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers football team. Fleck is from Sugar Grove, Illinois, and played wide receiver in college for the Northern Illinois Huskies. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the San Francisco 49ers in 2004 despite going undrafted. He spent most of his time training before moving on to teaching.
Fleck began his coaching career in 2006 as an offensive graduate assistant at Ohio State University. He assisted on special teams and worked closely with the Buckeyes. When he was hired at Western Michigan University in 2012, he made history as the youngest head coach and the first head coach born in the 1980s to coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Later, under Fleck’s leadership, the Minnesota Golden Gophers enjoyed their best season in fifty years in 2019, winning their most games since 1904.
