Heavy rains in Lachung
Currently, there are several tourists who have been caught and blocked in places like Lachen and Lachung in North Sikkim where some of the famous tourist destinations like Yumthang and Gurudongmar are located. Reportedly, the people were safely rescued and brought to safer places near Gangtok. Recently, the Indian Meteorological Department issued a fresh warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of North Bengal over the weekend, raising fears of landslides and rising river levels. Moreover, even the authorities present in Sikkim have been forcing tourists not to visit some of the popular tourist destinations in the northern parts of the Himalayan state.
According to officials, several hundred tourists, who were stranded in places like Lachen and Lachung in North Sikkim where some of the popular tourist destinations like Yumthang and Gurudongmar are located, were rescued and protected and brought to places where they insured. Reportedly, the rainfall recorded in Gangtok between June 1 and 16 is the highest this year compared to 2020 and 2021. This year, the capital of Sikkim received 632.5 mm of rain during the period compared to 232.1 mm and 486 .6 mm in 2020 and 2021 during the same time period. Significantly, areas and districts of North Bengal have been showing heavy rains for quite some time.
However, in the last 24 hours, some places like Buxadur and Hasimare in Alipirduar district received about 250 mm and 230 mm of rain respectively. Several places recorded more than 50 mm of rain. The water level has reportedly risen in some parts such as Torsa and Kaljani, and some low-lying areas that have been released in Alipurdaur and Cooch Behar districts. According to the regional office located in Kolkata, the current conditions are favorable and the monsoon is likely to cover the remaining parts of West Bengal in the next two to three days.
