Computer programmer Thomas, 23, is the grandson of Sir Gilbert Stanley Thomas – behind the business empire that included Peter’s Pies.
Thomas has been charged with murder and is due to appear in court next month.
Police tape remained at the scene last week and flowers were also left there.
Thomas and best friend Will, 23, attended Christ College in Brecon.
Sober health food fan Thomas moved two years ago with his black Labrador to a nearby terraced house — jointly owned by his grandparents and Welsh rugby great Sir Gareth Edwards.
Will, a surveyor from a commercial real estate company, moved in soon after.
His family – English teacher father John, 61, mum Elizabeth, 63, sister Catrin and brother Alexander – paid tribute to the keen rugby player and golfer.
The family, who live in Brecon, South Wales, said: “Our beloved Will was taken from us in such a cruel and unspeakable way.
“Will was such a loyal, funny and caring son, brother and boyfriend.”
Sir Stanley Thomas, 82, was knighted in 2006 for his charitable work and services to business.
His father, also called Stanley Thomas, started selling meat pies in Merthyr Tydfil in the Welsh valleys.
The company, Peter’s Savory Products, was sold for £75m in 1988.
His family also owned a fifth of the shares in the TBI Group, which owned several airports, including Cardiff.
Thomas was due to appear at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on January 2.
His detention was ordered in absentia, and he is scheduled to appear before the court again on February 2.
