Hekani Jakhalu is an Indian lawyer, activist and politician who is contesting in the 2023 Nagaland Assembly elections. In 2023, she made headlines when she became the first woman elected to the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Nagaland along with Salhoutuonuo Kruse.

Hekani Jakhalu Kense was born in 1975 in Toluvi, Dimapur, Nagaland (48 years old; as of 2023). She attended Holy Cross High School in Dimapur and later Bishop Cotton School for Girls in Bangalore, Karnataka. Later, she attended Lady Shri Ram College for Women, New Delhi, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. In 2002, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies from American University. In 2008, she was admitted to Harvard University in the United States to receive executive education. Later, she received her LLB from Delhi University. She has since earned a degree in executive education from American University. She later attended the University of San Francisco, where she earned an LL.M. She later interned at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.

After completing her formal education, she started practicing medicine in New Delhi. She later co-founded a law firm in Delhi where she advised clients in the areas of civil and corporate law. However, she resigned from the company in 2005. As a lawyer, she represents her clients before the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court. Until 2005, she practiced law in the Delhi High Court.

Hekani Jakhalu joined the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) after leaving New Delhi to practice law and moving back to Nagaland. She is contesting from Dimapur III constituency in the 2023 Nagaland Assembly elections on behalf of NDPP.
In the election, she defeated Lok Janshakti (Ram Vilas) candidate Azheto Zimomi by 1536 votes and became the first woman from Nagaland to enter the state assembly. She said in an interview,
I won because people wanted change. I have been working in social services for the past 17+ years. I have always worked with young people. I will work for minority communities i.e. non-tribal communities. They make up more than half of the constituency’s population. “

In 2002, Hurkani began working with Amnesty International in San Francisco. She worked there until 2003. In 2006, Hekani Jakhalu left his law practice in New Delhi and moved to Dimapur, where he founded the non-profit organization YouthNet. The NGO has since established several employment centers in Nagaland to provide employment opportunities to the people of the Northeast based on their academic qualifications. The NGO has partnerships with global organizations such as JW Marriott Hotels and Pullman Hotels & Resorts. Later, the NGO started offering vocational courses to young people at very low cost. She said in an interview,
We provide them with a week-long training and explain the industry to them. Additionally, we keep in touch with them, especially those who are first time contacts. We have a mechanism that keeps track of them and looks after the safety and accommodation of young people for a year. “
In September 2008, she became president of the Young Indians and served until September 2010. In 2013, to promote young entrepreneurs, YouthNet launched an event called “The Entrepreneur” where many budding professionals expressed their ideas.
Herkani Jakalu said in an interview that she decided to start her own NGO in Nagaland after seeing a large number of young people from the northeastern region of India leaving their hometowns to work in New Delhi. Talking about this, she said,
In every store in every mall, you can see young boys and girls from the Northeast working there. I want to know what drives young people from the Northeast to the metropolis. Is it by choice or by force? Additionally, since most people come from small villages, these cities are unsafe, costly to live, and culturally different. “
In 2018, in order to promote local products of Nagaland, YouthNet established the “Nagaland Manufacturing Center”, where manufacturers sell products to consumers.
