Helen Perrottet News
The first official meeting of Helen Perrottet and her future husband took place over coffee at Hughenden, a Victorian castle in Woollahra. The skinny young lawyer was so worried that he skipped meals. She notes: “He was quite the gentleman. So kind. My parents adored him. My father adored him. She appreciated his wit and sense of humor. However, Perrottet was held back by something.
After six months in Canada, he has just returned. She had a career in military police and public affairs for the defense sector ahead of her. She was trained in the use of assault rifles, grenades, and in leading tank battalions while serving in the Army Reserves. She didn’t want a suitor; she wanted an adventure. They dated briefly, broke up, and then reconnected a few years later. Why did I say no in the first place when it’s something fantastic? I thought.
Perrottet, however, during the following years of courtship will continue to be torn between the adventure and starting a family with the man she adores. She says that she resisted domestication during her rebellious stages because she was worried about ending up as a “suburban mom”. I don’t do anything unless I want to, she reasoned herself then her.
Perrottet is currently a typical mother. For seven children, no less, whose father has a current job as Prime Minister of NSW. Home elevated to a higher level. After learning about her unfortunate past, she asks if she will take over again after her husband finishes his political career and has more time to help others around the house. Before I got married, I never dreamed that this would be my adventure, she assures her. I needed this.
We meet outside the Perrottets’ cozy Japanese late-night hideout, Yo Sushi, located in the shadowy Beecroft Mall. Perrottet presents me with the menu and greets the owners as if we were old friends. We order salmon sashimi, beef sushi, and steamed prawn dumplings, but I ask him so many questions that he barely has time to eat. I have a lot of questions about the practicalities of raising seven children. That’s actually the least intriguing thing about her.
The sixth of eight children, Perrottet, 42, grew up in Centennial Park in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. Although they were devout Catholics, she and many of her siblings attended Sydney Girls High and Sydney Boys High. Perrottet struggled with his English last year, but did well in four units of science and math. To learn the same texts twice, her mother enrolled her in TAFE’s HSC English program. We both smile when she says, “I’ve been studying The Great Gatsby.” My name is the same as the character in the book. “You were really upset.”
