Hemant Nagralai

Hemant Nagrale is an Indian police officer who succeeded Param Bir Singh as the Commissioner of Police during the Mukesh Ambani bomb scare case. Hemant Nagrale is known for helping and rescuing injured people during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. He also investigated the Harshad Mehta and Ketan Parekh scam cases.

Hemant Nagrale was born in 1962 (current age 59; 2021) in Bhadravati, Maharashtra. Hemant studied at Zila Parishad School till Class 6, after which he moved to Nagpur with his parents and continued his education at Patwardhan High School, Nagpur. Nagrale graduated from Visvesvaraya Regional Engineering College, Nagpur with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also studied at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai, with a Master’s degree in Financial Management.

Hemant married Pratima in 1989, two years after he joined the army. However, their marriage started to have problems and Hemant started claiming that his wife was mentally unstable. Later, Pratima filed a complaint against him in the police station, saying that Hemant had been physically torturing her to force her to divorce him. During the court hearing, the family court granted the couple permission to dissolve their marriage, but later, the Bombay High Court set aside the family court order and the divorce was annulled.

In 1989, Hemant joined the police force as a deputy superintendent of police in the Naxalite-controlled Chandrapur district. In 1992, he was posted to Solapur and successfully controlled the religious riots at the Babri Masjid. In 1994, Hemant Nagrale was promoted to the post of superintendent of police in Ratnagiri district. In 1996, Hemant was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the MPSC document leak case. In March 1998, Hemant was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation and became the Deputy Inspector General of the Central Bureau of Investigation, New Delhi. During his tenure at the Central Bureau of Investigation, New Delhi, Hemant solved many cases such as the Madhopura Co-op Bank, Ketan Parekh scam case and the Harshad Mehta bank scam case. He served as the DIG till 2002 and was subsequently appointed as the Special IGP and Director General of Vigilance and Security of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) from June 2008 to August 2010.

During his tenure as Special Inspector General of Police, Hemant successfully reformed the MPKAY scheme and helped cut expenditure by Rs 10 crore in 2011-2012. In 2014, Hemant was appointed Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mumbai. From May 2016 to July 2018, Hemant was posted as Commissioner of Police, Navi Mumbai. In October 2018, he was appointed Director General of Police, responsible for managing all forensic science laboratories in the state.

  • Hemant Nagrale played a key role in the Mumbai terror attacks on November 26, 2011. He was part of the team that entered the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel to rescue the injured and take them to safety. He also worked with the team to rescue the dead from the hotel.
