Before arriving on Oak Island, Marty worked for years in a variety of sectors. He started accumulating a little fortune in the late 1970s after being hired as a petroleum engineer by the Amoco Production Company. After three years, Marty quit his job and founded Terra Energy Limited, a business that specialises in the exploitation of Michigan’s shale gas resources.
Over time, he built up a distribution network through his business, becoming the leading operator in the shale gas sector. Marty, whose opinions were notoriously unstable, had other ideas for the future and decided to sell the business to CMS for $58 million, using the money to purchase a vineyard.
