Who are Herbert Wigwe’s parents?
Herbert Wigwe was a Nigerian banker and businessman who served as the Group Managing Director and CEO of Access Bank Plc after succeeding his business partner, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede.
Herbert began his career at Coopers & Lybrand and Guaranty Trust Bank. In January 2014, he was appointed President of the Access Bank Management Board.
Herbert Wigwe died on February 9, 2024 in a helicopter crash in the USA on his way to participate in the Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas. He died along with five others after the Eurocopter EC130 carrying all passengers crashed near Nipton, California.
Those 5 other dead passengers were Herbert’s wife, his son, former chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, Abimbola Ogunbanjo and two crew members.

Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe was born on August 15, 1966 in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria to Shyngle Wigwe (father) and Stellar Wigwe (mother). His father was born on October 8, 1934 to Augustus Wigwe, a police officer, and Watuza Wigwe in Isiokpo, Rivers State.
Shyngle passed out at Okrika Grammar School and graduated from Yaba Technical Institute in 1959. He then attended Southampton Technical College, UK, and the University of Pittsburgh. Herbert’s father retired as the Director General of the Nigerian Television Authority. Herbert’s mother is a nurse and has five children.
Herbert Wigwe was married to Chizoba Wigwe with whom he had four children Chizi, Tochi, Hannah and David. Chizi was also in the helicopter that crashed, taking the lives of Herbert, his wife and son. Herbert Wigwe’s wife was a respected and successful lawyer and entrepreneur.

Herbert Wigwe studied at the University College of North Wales in 1990 and obtained a Master of Arts degree in Banking and Finance in 1991. He received an MA in Financial Economics from the University of London in 1996.
He also studied at Harvard Business School’s executive management program. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Herbert Wigwe left behind an estimated net worth of around $62.5 million.
