Career
Edwards played in the National Football League for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1977 to 1985, winning a Super Bowl with the team in Super Bowl XV. Edwards’ playing career culminated in the final seconds of his twelfth game against the New York Giants at the Meadowlands on November 19, 1978.
After his playing career ended, Edwards worked as a defensive assistant at San Jose State from 1987 to 1989. He then worked as a scout and defensive backs coach for the Kansas City Chiefs from 1990 to 1995. He worked for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1996–2000) as a defensive backs/assistant head coach under Tony Dungy.
On January 28, 2001, Edwards was named head coach of the New York Jets, despite having never previously held a head coaching or coordinator position. Edwards guided the Jets to a 39–41 regular-season record, including a 5–15 mark in his final twenty regular-season games, and a 2–3 postseason mark in his five seasons as head coach. Edwards made his regular-season coaching debut with the Chiefs on September 10, losing 23–10 at home to the Cincinnati Bengals.
On October 1, he won his first game with the Chiefs, a 41–0 shutout of the San Francisco 49ers. Throughout the 2006 season, there would be numerous highs and lows. Trent Green, the team’s starting quarterback, suffered a serious concussion in the season opener. On January 6, 2007, the Chiefs were defeated 23–8 by the Indianapolis Colts.
Edwards began his career as an analyst for the network’s NFL Live program in 2009. Similarly, on December 3, 2017, he was named head coach of the Arizona State football team. Edwards earned his first victory at Arizona State on September 1, 2018 against UTSA.
