Hero Dad Who Tackled a Suspect in Chiefs Parade Shooting Speaks Out: I Heard 'Get Him'

Trey Filter was caught on video struggling with a suspected gunman as the man ran through a crowd after a parade Wednesday in Missouri

The man who tackled a suspected gunman after Wednesday’s shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade in Missouri has broken his silence after video of his heroic efforts was released.

Trey Filter, a father of two from Wichita, Kansas, was caught on camera struggling with the suspected gunman as the man ran through the crowd after Wednesday’s Super Bowl parade, where shots rang out, killing one woman and wounding 22 others.

“There was a lot of commotion, I could definitely tell someone was being chased,” Trey recalled of the moment Good morning America on Thursday. “I didn’t see much, but I heard ‘Get him,’ I saw a flash next to me and I remember jumping and I remember thinking, ‘I hope that’s who they were talking about.’ ”

He continued: “We were quite elated when we found out we had him. They started yelling, ‘There’s a gun, there’s a gun,’ so we were pretty determined to keep him down there.”

Said Trey, who attended the parade with his two sons and wife Casey Filter Post of the moment the would-be assailant ran past him, which quickly circulated on social media: “My brain is telling me, ‘It’s got to be him.’ ”

In the video, a man runs through the bustling crowd and Trey grabs him, pulling him to the ground as another man jumps in to help restrain the suspected attacker. Trey’s wife, Casey, grabbed the gun. Paul Contreras appeared on TodayThursday, and identified himself as the second man who tackled the suspected shooter.

She said it was a “fight or flight” reaction from both of them.

“We just did what we felt we needed to do at the time. I don’t think we could just walk away,” she told Chris Cuomo during an interview with NewsNation.

Their sons, who are said to be 12 and 15 years old Post, “are pretty proud of their dad,” Casey continued. Those boys stood right next to their father as he helped tackle the suspected attacker to the ground.

The person killed during the mass shooting was identified late Wednesday as mother of two Lisa Lopez-Galvan, according to The Kansas City Star. Her employer, KKFI 90.1 FM, shared a branch report and confirmed the news. “It is with sincere sadness and extremely heavy and broken hearts that we inform our community that KKFI DJ Lisa Lopez, host of Taste of Tejano lost her life today in a shooting at a KC Chiefs rally.”

The statement continued: “Our hearts and prayers are with her family. We encourage anyone who thinks they saw something to contact police at 816 234 5111. This senseless act took a beautiful person from her family and this KC community.”

Friends of Lopez-Galvan confirmed her death Starwho reported that she died during surgery after suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

According to Graves, there is no motive for the shooting at this time. She told reporters that the shooting began on the west side of the city’s Union Station right after a rally to honor the Chiefs, who won the Super Bowl on Sunday.

According to a PEOPLE reporter from the field at the parade, loud pops rang out as the confetti began to fall as the players left the stage. Witnesses at the scene said they saw multiple people bleeding, although it was unclear what the source of their injuries was.
