Hoda Kotb had a minor medical accident on Thursday Today with Hoda and Jennawhich is why she couldn’t read the teleprompter.
Live with co-host Jenna Bush Hager on NBC’s morning show, Kotb explained that she lost a contact lens in her left eye socket.
“I think the contact caught my eye up here,” Kotb, 59, said at the end of the program’s first segment. “I don’t think I took it out last night and I can’t find it. It looks like it’s in there!”
– I’m not kidding – added the mother of two children while rubbing her left eye. – I wanted to go to the eye doctor, but I didn’t have time.
Hager, 42, offered support but wasn’t sure what to do. So Kotb asked the audience for advice.
“Maybe people have tricks to pull it off, because I’m sure people have had contacts that have rolled up,” she asked. “How do I get it out? I’ve tried? If you know, will you post on X? I just want to get it out!”
The show then went to commercial. But when he returned for his second segment, Hager said the situation only got worse.
“We have the latest news: Hoda has now completely lost her sight because her second contact fell out,” she said. “I’ll keep reading and hopefully when the health person comes we can sort this out.”
As she did so, Kotb checked herself in the hand mirror, trying to find what was wrong. “There are two in there, I’m not kidding,” she lamented.
She then tried on a fan-submitted tip where she looked down and pulled back her eyelid. And luckily, it worked. “That was so crazy, that was the best advice!” she said!

Still, Kotb couldn’t see. “I can only see you,” she told Hager. “Everything looks super blurry.”
“It looks like a bunch of mixed colors,” she said. “This is really weird. I’m completely dependent on you 100 percent. Not reading is not easy. I can’t read anything!”
Hager was forced to take over, although he was not happy about it. “I don’t like this feeling,” she said. “I love partnering with you. Let’s hope the doctor arrives in the next few minutes and can see Hod!”
“I just need one more contact,” Kotb said.
The doctor didn’t make it, but the Oscar winner did — specifically Ariana DeBose, who came out before the interview with the two clutching contacts for a very grateful Kotb.
– I’ll take your glasses too! Kotb joked with DeBose.
